Experienced Handlers
At Chicago Canine Rescue, we believe that every dog deserves a chance at a happy, healthy life — including those facing unique challenges. Our Experienced Handlers play a crucial role in supporting dogs with medical and behavioral barriers to adoption, helping them overcome obstacles that might otherwise make it difficult for them to find their forever homes.
These dedicated volunteers show up every day with patience, compassion, and a deep understanding of canine behavior. They work closely with our dogs who need the most support and guidance, advocating for their needs and helping them thrive in a shelter environment.

What Do Experienced Handlers Do?
Building Trust and Relationships: Some dogs have limited socialization skills or have a hard time in the shelter environment. Experienced Handlers take the time to build trust with each dog, developing positive, healthy relationships through gentle, consistent interactions.
Leash Manners & Basic Training: For dogs who are unsure of how to navigate the world, leash manners are often a first step toward gaining confidence. Handlers work on basic skills like walking politely on a leash, responding to cues, and reinforcing positive behaviors. This foundation helps dogs feel more comfortable and prepares them for life in a home.
Behavioral Support: For dogs dealing with behavioral challenges — whether it’s fear-based reactions, resource guarding, or difficulty with handling — Experienced Handlers take a slow, methodical approach to working through these issues. They collaborate with our trainers to develop tailored strategies to address undesirable behaviors and teach dogs more positive alternatives.
Preparing for Adoption: The ultimate goal of our Experienced Handlers is to prepare each dog for adoption. By building on trust, reinforcing good behavior, and helping them learn to engage with new people, these handlers improve a dog’s chances of finding the right home. They work to ensure that each dog’s personality shines through, helping potential adopters see beyond their challenges.
Why Are Experienced Handlers Important?
Dogs with medical or behavioral barriers often need more time, patience, and expertise than other dogs. They may have been through difficult experiences that make it harder for them to trust people, or they may need help learning how to interact with their environment in a healthy way. Our Experienced Handlers provide the specialized care and attention these dogs need to succeed. With their guidance, dogs can build confidence, overcome fears, and develop the skills necessary to thrive in a home.
Our Experienced Handlers are supported by our team of animal professionals, who work side-by-side with them to create a tailored plan for each dog. This collaboration ensures that every dog gets the individual attention they need and the training necessary to increase their chances of a successful adoption.
